Question about time stamps on the blog

Hi Rick,

Thanks for your question. That email was time-stamped here on the boat at 1209, which is Hawaii time, which is what you use for all activities on board. I can only speculate that the blog server is in the PDT time zone and it time-stamped the message at 1509 local time. Any thing else? keep 'em coming. ~~Chris

  1. Indeed the blog is run on Pacific Time Zone. This is how it was set when we began blogging a few years back, and it is reasonable since the race is using this time zone also.

So, in the race (PCup and transpac) all is PDT - race schedule, onboard time, blog time. In delivery, blog time stays PDT, but all else is Hawaiian time.

This is all fine as long as you are underway, but once you hit the finish line you realize a 3h difference between your time and those on the race committee, taking your arrival time. It seemingly always results in some boats making a sudden jump in performance because of a mix-up of the time zones. I can catch this with Cirrugator, but some may go unnoticed.

  2. The blog posts show UTC not PDT! We hope all is well. I talk to Kathy's parents every day and they are happy to hear about Cirrus' progress and that we think you are chugging along quite nicely. The lack of weather here makes us cross our fingers for you!

Good Morning Cirrus, here is something we thought you would enjoy.

    In Cabin'd Ships at Sea
    BY
    Walt Whitman

    In cabin'd ships at sea,
The boundless blue on every side expanding,
With whistling winds and music of the waves, the large imperious waves,
Or some lone bark buoy'd on the dense marine,
Where joyous full of faith, spreading white sails,
She cleaves the ether mid the sparkle and the foam of day, or under many a star at night,
By sailors young and old haply will I, a reminiscence of the land, be read,
    In full rapport at last.

Here are our thoughts, voyagers' thoughts,
Here not the land, firm land, alone appears, may then by them be said,
The sky o'erarches here, we feel the undulating deck beneath our feet,
We feel the long pulsation, ebb and flow of endless motion,
The tones of unseen mystery, the vague and vast suggestions of the briny world, the liquid-flowing syllables,
The perfume, the faint creaking of the cordage, the melancholy rhythm,
The boundless vista and the horizon far and dim are all here,
    And this is ocean's poem.

Then falter not O book, fulfil your destiny,
You not a reminiscence of the land alone,
You too as a lone bark cleaving the ether, purpos'd I know not
whither, yet ever full of faith,
Consort to every ship that sails, sail you!
Bear forth to them folded my love, (dear mariners, for you I fold it here in every leaf;)
Speed on my book! spread your white sails my little bark athwart the imperious waves,
Chant on, sail on, bear o'er the boundless blue from me to every sea,
This song for mariners and all their ships.

  4. All these time zone issues...
Whenever a post or a comment reaches the server of the blog site, it gets a timestamp. This is in PDT. Like Kim's last post has the timestamp "June 6, 2010 10:26AM". This tells me that it was typed and send a few seconds before 7:26AM Hawaiian time.
Within a post you can type whatever you want, and if you don't stick to any routine, your readers are confused. Like right now it is 19:59h German time! (Dinner is waiting). On the blog it should get the timestamp 10:59AM.

Today's Yotreps (June 6 UTC 1649hrs) is providing the exact lat/long for June 5 at the same time. So we dont have your latest position update.

Disregard my last comment on Yotreps, what we have is that it has not updated today as it usually does by this time, so it is still showing yesterday's info. Same result, we dont have a position update.
