we currently have a big rain shower, the first real one in this race. We needed to not only close the hatch, but also put the door-window in the companionway. Going at a good clip now.
The ETA remains unchanged at 3 a.m. Hawaiian time. Only in the best of circumstances will it be a 1/2 hour earlier. However, since we have a low low tide at about 3 a.m., we may have to hang out a while until the flood comes in and we can go through the Sampan channel. We were discussing hanging the crew out at the end of the boom to give the boat heel and let us go through the channel immediately. After all these good meals, this should have an impact :->. We want to avoid the shipping channel, as it take even more time.
Is there some official advice for the ebb/flood situation? As this is outside the race, you may just as well also give your own info and/or recommendation.

Regarding Kaneohe Bay tides, your info seems to be correct. I have seen various predictions but they all seem to say that low tide is around 4:00 am Tuesday, and it's very low; zero to slightly minus. Of course, I need to remind our mainland readers that this is Hawaii, where a high tide is two feet.
ReplyDeletePerhaps if the crew swam ashore, that would lighten Cirrus enough to allow Bill to drive her down the Sampan Channel. I'll bet the Pacific Cup inspector would not be amused. ~~Chris
Regarding Bill's request for a "next day" lunch get together for the friends and families of Cirrus, I have contacted the group and proposed that in the timeless world of ocean sailing, you would never notice if we held it later the same day. So you are all set for noon on Tuesday at KYC. That should give you enough time to get some sleep and a shower, and still keep the stories fresh. ~~Chris
ReplyDeletePLEASE NOTE THAT ESCORT COMMITTEE RAN A LEAD LINE AT MEAN LOW AND AT NO POINT WAS THE THERE LESS THAN 8' IN SAMPAN. THAT WAS IN A LIGHTER BOAT THAN CIRRUS BUT I SUGGEST YOU ASK FOR IWALANI'S OPINION WHEN YOU DO YOUR 5 MILE
